Session 1: Advanced Writing & Editing
Important messages get printed, streamed, e-mailed and Tweeted. Whether internal or external your audiences are reading, watching, listening-talking back. Even the bosses have discovered the power of storytelling! Your words, and how you present them, are more important than ever.

Session 2: Brand Journalism

Are you ready for brand journalism?

Brand journalism combines real reporting and lively storytelling (that’s the journalism), with your organization’s experts and experiences (that’s the branding). A few organizations have figured out a new way to tell their stories, using the tried-and-true methods of journalism to engage their audiences and boost their competitive advantage.

In this session, Mark Ragan will share the principles of brand journalism and show you how you can apply them to your own organization.

The case of the PR body snatchers

1117 556 Danielle Kelly, APR

I hope that everyone is having a great start to 2016. I know that one of the things that I love to do during the holidays is catch up on some reading.  I am a long time subscriber to Toronto Life and an article in their December issue caught my eye and I thought it would make a great starting point for a discussion on our member blog. This article piqued my interest and really got me thinking about our professions’ role in the scenario.

The article, by Nicholas Hune-Brown, is called The Body Snatchers. The premise of the article is the public campaign by sports and business leader Eugene Melnyk to crowd source his request for a live liver donation. In addition to referencing the Melnyk case, the article reviews two other campaigns that made similar requests for organ donations for young children.  More specifically, the two campaigns for Toronto-area children, Delfina and Jacob, received some professional assistance.  The person who provided this assistance was inspired to help the families find an appropriate donor after seeing a post on Facebook. For the thesis of the article Hune-Brown asks the question: “what happens when PR campaigns decide who lives and who dies.”

We were fortunate the campaigns featured in the article all had positive endings. Both children and Melnyk received the organ donations they needed.  While I praise the initiative of the person who came forward to help raise awareness for Delfina and Jacob there are some questions that running a campaign like this raises.

Have these campaigns created a new reality for living organ donation in our province? Is this something that our profession can now consider to be a business? What is the role for remuneration in a situation like this, and, how would the profession deal with any potential conflicts? Do we, as one bioethicist in the articles suggests, create the potential to turn this into a beauty contest?

I don’t believe it is the job of PR to decide “who lives or dies”, I do however consider it to be one of the duties of our profession to engage in conversation on issues of the day and the live donor organ donation debate is relevant.  I would love to hear what you think and I look forward to a stimulating conversation on the member’s blog!

Counting down to my Toronto 2015 Pan Am journey

150 150 Danielle Kelly, APR

I am seven days away from my first shift at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. I will be working in Press Operations at the Ontario Place West Channel in CIBC Pan Am Park.  I am doubly blessed to be participating in this event. Not only was I selected from a pool of 70,000 applicants to participate in these games, my role will allow me to use my PR and Communication skills and expertise to ensure that these games are a positive experience for the 1700 journalists who will be covering the event.  I am part of an 800 person “crew” of Press Operations volunteers.

It has been a lot of fun training and communicating with fellow crew members, some close to home and others further away. I am looking forward to meeting our guest crew members (who are coming from around the globe) over the next couple of weeks. We have a very active Facebook forum and recently someone shared a video that I would also like to share with you, my CPRS colleagues.  This brief International Olympic Committee (IOC) video describing their Press Operations processes really resonated with me and has me all fired up to start working next week (even with a 6:30 a.m. venue call time next Saturday!). Did you know that IOC spends three years before each Olympic event preparing their operational strategies?

I would love to know your thoughts on the video or on the games as well. What aspect of the games are you most excited about? How will you be participating?

I am going to try and stay as active as I can on social media during the games and you are welcome to follow my posts on LinkedIn,  Twitter (@prdrln) and Instagram (@daniellekellyapr).

UPDATE – CPRS Toronto By-law Review

150 150 Danielle Kelly, APR

I am happy to announce that the CPRS Toronto By-law review process has reach another important milestone!

I wrote a post  this past march March  about the work that is underway to ensure that our Bylaws were compliant with the forthcoming Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporation Act (ONCA).

After discussing the proposed changes with CPRS National office and your Toronto Board of Directors, the document is ready for membership comment.

You have two ways you can review the proposed changes:

1) By-law document (Full) – this document is in track changes mode so members can see the proposed amendments in context.

Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporation Act Coming Soon – CPRS By-Law Review Currently Underway

150 150 Danielle Kelly, APR

Ontario’s new Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 will make it simpler to incorporate and provide not-for-profit corporations with up-to-date rules to run the organization. It will also ensure greater transparency and accountability.

When the Act comes into force, it will generally apply automatically to all Ontario not-for-profit corporations, including CPRS Toronto.

Existing not-for-profit corporations will have a three-year transition period once the Act comes into force to make any changes to their incorporation and other documents necessary to bring them into conformity with the Act.

Danielle Kelly, APR,  Secretary of the Board of Directors of CPRS Toronto, is performing a review of the By-laws to ensure that they will comply with the forthcoming ONCA legislation.

A draft of the By-laws will be posted here for member review shortly.

It is expected that the By-law review will be completed in Summer 2015, so that CPRS Toronto members may vote on the revised By-laws at the 2014 Annual General Meeting.

Additional information about ONCA is also available here: ONCA presentation slides – March 30 2015

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Danielle should you have any additional questions or comments.
